The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 质感和主题都好，看的太舒服了，B级片往往都是血腥和色情，但为什么一定要密不可分，这个做的真好，
很另类的恐怖片，暴力的实行者如此老弱不堪，血浆飞溅，看到的不是恐怖，反而是有些悲哀，特别是最后电视里播放着宗教的回归，主角正是女主，实在有些浓烈的反讽。

「赋予行为以动机」恐怕是新世纪恐怖片始终贯彻的一个基本点，而本片在怀旧滤镜之外，试图挖掘出「垮掉的一代」的心灵根源，以及更大的人类共情——「生命的激情」，这样的情感的确是会变异成妖的。
关注老年人性生活，否则容易滋生老变态！

如果我是女主角，在影片最后的情节里我才不会用轮胎爆头这种俗套的手法泄恨，我会直接开车直接压断她的小腿让她哇哇叫，在她满口咒骂声中伸出手比着中指扬长而去。#男人老了记得量力而性以免一命呜呼。

这个片子要怎么说呢？首先低于预期，但枯燥剧情下的细节和彩蛋非常丰富，戏中戏只作为技巧使用，没有成为推进情节的关键原素，降低了紧张感和剧作紧密程度。跳轴用的也不高明，中场讨论的问题明明很有趣：如果摄影机是结界，开机之后做的一切事情都不受道德审判，你会怎么做？但电影中只看到AV摄影师对女朋友想做女优的双标，确没有在这条线进行深入讨论，很多的《闪灵》《惊魂记》《大白鲨》元素，女主角一饰二角，包括角色曲线的成长，全部浅尝辄止，花拳绣腿。这些是缺点，但也是特点。
