赌博类型片的外壳，内在是导演施拉德反复多次拍摄的赎罪主题。主人公的身份设计有趣而值得深究，算牌高手往往能掌握赌桌上的胜算几率，却难以控制他人的命运轨迹。沉静缓慢的叙事节奏配合上隐约诡异的配乐，将潜藏主人公的心魔再次勾引出来，这种难以磨灭的道德愧疚感是类似赎罪题材的核心，也是近年来好莱坞反思题材的常见模型。施拉德此次突破不大，在过于精密的掌控之下流露出黑色影片的气质，整体而言过于老派，不讨好年轻观众是意料中事。
